History
Also known as Parlakhemundi, it is an ancient Zamindari lying in the western corner of the Southern portion of the Ganjam district, and it is bounded in the West by the district of Vizagpatnam and on the North by the Jeypur state and the Eastern ghats which are called Maliyas or tribal agencies. Founded by a younger son of Gajapati Raja Kapilendra Dev of Orissa.

- Capt. Maharaja Saheb Shri Shri Shri KRISHNA CHANDRA GAJAPATHI NARAYANA DEO, Raja of Parlakhimedi 1913/1974, born , educated at Raja's College, Parlakimedi and Newington College, Madras; he was granted the title of Maharaja in 1936, K.C.I.E. [cr.1946], Member of the Madras Legislative Council 1919, 1st Prime Minister of Orissa [1.4.1937] - [18.7.1937] and again [xx.11.1941] - [1944], a patron of education and culture, he helped establish the Utkal University, the Central Rice Research Institute and the Medical College at Cuttack. In Parlakhimedi, he set up a first grade college, Sanskrit College, Girls' High School, Industrial School, Steel Factory, Modern Farm, numerous Minor Irrigation Projects. He also extended the light railway from Parlakhemundi to Gunupur, 35 miles away; made endowments for research on problems of nutrition and agriculture; awarded scholarships to over a thousand students of Parlakhemundi to pursue higher studies in the humanities, medicine, engineering, etc. He served with distinction as a member of the Royal Agricultural Commission in 1927, the Madras Legislative Council and the Constituent Assembly of India 1947/1950; he attended the Round Table Conference, London 1930/1931 where he represented the case of Orissa; made a life member of the Royal Society of Arts and Royal Asiatic Society, London; Life member of Utkal University, which conferred the honorary degree of LL.D. He was a patron of Oriya literature as well as of cricket and a prominent figure in racing circles, he married 1913, Maharani Sri Nalini Pattamaha Devi, daughter of Thakur Mahendra Narayan Singh Deo of Kharsawan, and had issue. He died .
